Aston Villa shot stopper Emiliano Martinez is the reigning king of Premier League goalkeepers in fantasy football after finishing with the most points at the end of the 2020/21 campaign. The Argentine international had more fantasy football points than any other Premier League goalkeeper during the recently finished season despite having fewer clean sheets than Chelsea goalkeeper Edouard Mendy and Ederson Moraes of Manchester City.

Martinez has enjoyed a rapid rise in the last one year after he took his opportunity at Arsenal following the knee injury to first choice Gunners goalkeeper Bernd Leno towards the end of last season. He stepped from his previous position as the number two Arsenal goalkeeper to play an important role in the Gunners’ FA Cup title at the end of last season. He was also in the Arsenal goal when they won the 2020 Community Shield via penalties.

His fantastic club form was rewarded with an invitation to the Argentine national team and he has been a regular in the squad till date.

Martinez became an Aston Villa player in September 2020 following his move from Arsenal. He had to leave the Gunners when manager Mikel Arteta could not guarantee him a starting place. Villa paid around £20m for the transfer.

In his first season as a regular Premier League goalkeeper, Martinez played all the 38 games. He was one of the first names on the Aston Villa teamsheet. The Argentine shot stopper was one of the reasons that Villa stayed in European football contention for many months rather than a relegation fight. Villa had been involved in a relegation fight the previous season and had to wait till the final day to secure their status.

Martinez finished his first season at Villa with 15 clean sheets. Only Mendy (16) and Ederson (19) had more. He also finished with 186 fantasy football points, 26 more than the nearest challenger Ederson (160). The 186 points recorded made him the king of the Premier League goalkeepers in fantasy football at the end of the just concluded campaign.
