Belgium international Romelu Lukaku has said that Luke Shaw has been Manchester United’s player of the season so far after putting in a string of impressive performances. The England international had dropped down the pecking order under ex-boss Jose Mourinho in the previous campaign and he found himself on the verge of being sold.

However, the left-back managed to redeem himself after going through a personal training session in Dubai in pre-season and he has since commanded a regular role across all competitions. Speaking to MUTV, Lukaku admitted that he has been impressed with the upturn in form from Shaw during the ongoing campaign and he deserves the chance to compete for the club’s Player of the Year award this term.

He said: “Luke Shaw has been the best player of the season for me. He has been brilliant since the start. Throughout the summer we kept in touch and I remember when he was in New York he was sending me videos of him running on the treadmill. I was in Russia for the World Cup and I got these videos and I saw someone who was going to come back and be good. He scored in the first game of the season against Leicester City and he has never looked back.”

Shaw most recently featured for United during the goalless draw against Liverpool where he was praised by interim boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. The former Southampton graduate came head-to-head with Mohamed Salah during the game but he managed to restrict the Egyptian’s threat to the point that Jurgen Klopp decided to remove him from the field of play.

United are currently one point behind Arsenal in the race for the final Champions League spot but they have plenty of time to make ground with 11 matches remaining before the end of the season.
